CONTEXT

With over 26.5 million daily users, Discord is a social messaging app well-known in the gaming community — but not so much outside of it.

In an effort to understand this problem, I worked through the design process and gathered that one primary reason for this was the steep learning curve.

After exploring three possible features Discord could implement to solve this issue, I landed on improving the onboarding experience by implementing a “tutorial/help” server.

PROBLEM

How might we get new users accustomed to Discord’s features/ecosystem without confusing them?

OUTCOME

I optimized the onboarding flow and designed a “help center” structured similarly to typical Discord servers with it own unique bots and features, ensuring that no users will be left behind and highlighting Discord’s unique features to increase retention.
